Named "The Loveliest Town in Canada", Niagara-on-the-Lake has got quite a few things to brag about. In the late 18th century, the British Crown appointed it as the first capital of the Province of Upper Canada which is now known as Ontario. Niagara-on-the-Lake's climate is ideal for producing wines, some of the best wines I've ever tasted including a world-famous ice wine. The oldest continuously used golf course in North America calls this cozy town home. While apples and strawberries flourish all over the country, your "Canadian Grown" peaches, apricots, or cherries are likely brought to your local grocery store from Niagara-on-the-Lake.

For seven months a year, the Shaw Festival attracts thousands of people featuring over a dozen plays by the famous George Bernard Shaw at three permanent and one 'secret' theatre.
And that's considering that Niagara-on-the-Lake has a population of about 17,500.
Small shops and cozy restaurants dot the Queen Street.
Niagara Apothecary, a pharmacy museum and a souvenir store, gives you an idea of what a pharmacy looked like long before Shoppers Drug Mart and Rexall Pharma Plus.
Some fudge mini-factories or ice cream and gelato shops are the must-try while in town.
The area between Queen Street and the Niagara River features some of the best examples of old colonial Victoria-era buildings in Canada.
Hard to believe that many of them are 200 years old.
No wonder why Niagara-on-the-Lake is one of the primary places in Canada to retire.
Old Fort Niagara in Youngstown, New York reminds us about the War of 1812-1813 between the United States and Great Britain where English and French Canadians as well as native people fought shoulder-by-shoulder for the first time in history.
What is also nice about Niagara-on-the-Lake is that it's only a short drive or bike ride from Niagara Falls, so it's easy to combine the two places in one visit. Enjoy!
