Fort Lauderdale, often dismissed as yet another suburb of Miami, unexpectedly revealed its character that exceeded all my expectations. Having driven through the city countless times, I was pleasantly surprised to finally discover its unique identity, particularly along the scenic Riverwalk. What would have been a few hours killed in Starbucks before taking my train, turned out to be a nice stroll along the water's edge overlooking luxurious yachts, high-end condos, posh crowds, and nature which is never too far in Southern Florida.

Last fall, my wife and I went on a camping trip to Everglades National Park. This sprawling wilderness, covering 1.5 million acres in southern Florida, is my happy place where I like to return over and over again. To put the size of Everglades National Park into perspective, it’s roughly the size of the state of Delaware or half the size of the state of New Jersey. 200,000 alligators and 1,000 crocodiles call the Everglades home, as well as the critically endangered Florida panthers. What do you do on a windy cold day in Florida in the middle of the winter? Right - search for manatees in warm coastal waters. And what's the best way to spot them? Correct - by kayak or canoe. And that's exactly what we decided to do when the temperature dropped to 54 F / 12 C. Quick Google search returned a couple of locations in Fort Myers to do so, from which we picked a local community park called 'Lee County Manatee Park'. 

Very few people would argue that the best place to collect sea shells is Florida's Sanibel Island. At least in North America. Thanks to its rather unusual barrier islands' east-to-west orientation, thousands of shells wash up on the island's beaches each day. While shells come mostly from the warm tropical waters of the Caribbean Sea, people come from all over the world. Among different types of shells, the most desirable ones are the sand dollar and the Junonia shell.

First of all, alligators are spread all over Florida as well as nine other US states - from Texas all the way up to North Carolina. Alligators are pretty peaceful creatures and usually avoid people encounters, however before swimming in a river or a freshwater lake, it doesn't hurt to check your surroundings to make sure there is no alligator nearby. Not only can it save your life, but help keep a poor fellow gator out of trouble. Although alligators naturally live at the beautiful Juniper Springs Recreation Area in Central Florida, there have not been any problems with them in a pool where swimming is allowed.

Although many people associate Florida with Miami Beach and Disney World, this state actually has incredibly diverse natural wonders which are often overlooked by visitors. One such hidden treasure is Big Cypress National Preserve adjacent to the more famous Everglades National Park.

I know for a fact that more and more people, especially millennials prefer independent travelling to all-inclusive resorts.
